Visit to Earth's Mantle

Yesterday, our main activity consisted of walking the Tablelands trail, which winds into a vast area of red rocky terrain on which no plants will grow. Kind of like Mars, I imagine. Where you see plants, it's because some other material is present (we were really at the edge of the tablelands zone, which stretches for miles beyond the trail). This is "one of the best places on earth" says the parks brochure, to see the earth's mantle pushed up to the surface. Off on a side trail we climbed to a beautiful waterfall, where some snow remained from winter. It was a warm day, however, but very windy on the mountain. We stopped at the Hunky Dory gift shop where I purchased some beautiful handmade mitts I might use later on this trip.
